HUMAN HEALTH AND SAFETY
At levels encountered in the environment after application to roads and highways, calcium chloride does not present a hazard to public health. Calcium chloride is easily dissociated into calcium and chloride ions in water. Both ions are essential constituents of the body of all animals. Calcium is essential for the formation of skeletons, neural transmission, muscle contraction, coagulation of the blood, and so on. Chloride is required for regulating intracellular osmotic pressure and buffering. Calcium chloride is low in toxicity if swallowed in small amounts incidental to normal handling operations. For brief contact, no precautions other than clean body-covering clothing should be needed.
