Calcium chloride Home : Frequently Asked Questions : Deicing Application Questions

What are the recommendations for cleaning carpets that have been tracked with dirt, grime and residual deicer?

Carpeting and upholstery can be cleaned with a standard carpet cleaning vacuum and attachments containing warm, fresh water. If dirt and grime have been tracked in along with the deicer, a mildly acidic cleaning product (citric-based) may be added to the cleaning water. Since calcium chloride is mildly alkaline in nature, using an alkaline cleaner is generally not very effective.
